Croatia as a Vacation Destination:

Croatia extends to the Alps and the famous Danube, and its visible history reaches back in time to the Roman Empire. In between these far reaches, you’ll find a long and beautiful coastline, ancient ruins and medieval castles that have made this country a favorite destination among Europeans.

Croatia’s capital is Zagreb, a 900-year-old city of cobblestone streets that resembles Vienna, Prague and other great Central European cities. A must-see in Zagreb is Kaptol, the medieval complex of churches, palaces and museums that capture an ancient slice of Croatian life. Whether you visit the Upper Town or Lower Town areas, you’re sure to find a great selection of restaurants, shopping and recreation. Nearby Medvedgrad Mountain and its preserved fortress provide great vantage points from which you can take in the whole city.

Known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, the seaport city of Dubrovnik has long been one of the premier destinations in the Mediterranean. In fact, during the Middle Ages, it rivaled Venice in terms of commerce, culture and all-around beauty. Apart from its many miles of gorgeous coastline, you’ll also enjoy the Dubrovnik Highlands, where mountains and pine forests serve as the setting for great hiking, fishing and winter sports.

Hvar is a great summer and winter destination because of its accommodating climate. Behind its 700-year-old walls lies a cultural wellspring of museums, galleries and the oldest municipal theatre in Europe. The Mediterranean city of Split offers a storied 1,700-year history that’s just as impressive. Its historic center is the remains of the Roman Diocletian Palace, and visitors to Split can also find interesting archaeological and historic sites throughout the city. For something a little more modern, check out the sunbathing scene at Bacvice beach and the city’s many quaint cafes and restaurants.

Croatia as a Vacation Destination for Gay and Lesbian Vacationers:

Folks in Croatia have a pretty open-minded approach toward gays and lesbians, especially in the larger cities. There are laws on the books that allow for same-sex unions and uphold gay rights, and the country’s major political parties are on-board with this mindset.

Zagreb is also the capital of Croatia’s gay life, with the largest concentration of gays in the quaint Upper Town area. Dubrovnik is also a popular LGBT destination, though there aren’t blatant gay clubs or hang-outs. Instead, many congregate at the popular Lokrum Beach on Lokrum Island.
